Some 200 gays and lesbians, dozens of human rights activists and many heterosexual Bulgarians marched in Sofia Saturday to promote tolerance at a Gay Pride that has been slammed by the Orthodox Church.

"Love equality, embrace diversity" was the slogan of this year's parade that passed along Sofia's streets escorted by a heavy police cordon, after last year's rally was marred by clashes and dozens of arrests.

Some 100 nationalists staged an anti-gay protest earlier in the day but a police official told AFP that there were no arrests and "everything is perfect."

The colourful crowd waved rainbow flags against a lively din of music that prompted many smiling heads to pop out of windows along their way, but also attracted stern looks from some elderly Bulgarians.
