Argentina committee advises against gay marriage bill

Argentina’s Senate General Legislation Committee rejected the gay marriage bill when they met yesterday to make a recommendation on the bill to the wider senate.

The Buenos Aires Herald reports that of the 15 committee members, seven signed the rejection of the same-sex marriage bill, and six were in support of it. The two other senators had previously expressed opposition to the bill, but were unable to sign the rejection due to reported flight complications.

The bill was approved in May by the Chamber of Deputies – Argentina’s lower legislative house – after 12 hours of debate. The final vote was 125 in favor of the same-sex marriage legislation, 109 opposed.

The committee’s rejection began the discussion in the country’s upper house and was the last round of debates before the full senate meets on July 14 where both the majority and minority opinions will be debated. In its rejection, the committee recommended passing the civil union bill that is also being debated now in Argentina...

This sucks. I really had high hopes after the bill passed in the lower house.. I guess a civil union is better than nothing, and at least a step in the right direction, though there's not full equality before they get gay marriage imo.
