A Family First party candidate has likened gay marriage to “legalising child abuse,” in a mad twitter rant which could end her political career.

Wendy Francis (pictured), the Senate candidate in Queensland whose embarrassing anti-gay views were aired last week in a televised debate with the Australian Sex Party, launched into a tirade against gay marriage on her twitter page yesterday, prompting hundreds of fuming tweeters to challenge her bigoted views.

“Australia would never recover from legalising gay marriage,” she thundered. “Those who advocate this are not thinking of the dramatic consequences.”

Then the slurs began. “Children in homosexual relationships are subject to emotional abuse. Legitimising gay marriages is like legalising child abuse.

“Gay marriage = kids with no mothers or no fathers, parent-less generation; uncontrollable depression & suicide. Is that the Aust we want?”

A few minutes went by, then Francis continued her slurs, prefacing them with an attempt to note that she wasn’t actually homophobic: “All have a right to be homosexual,” she allowed. “But no right to dictate to mainstream Australia or to change laws to suit their narrow agenda.”

But why is Francis so keen to strike a cruel blow against thousands of Australian gay parents? “Someone has to talk about the issues that affect Australian families and children,” she explained. “The major parties do not. I want to bring balance to senate.”

“You’re a disgusting bigot!”

It didn’t take long for the Family First candidate’s anti-gay comments to be called out by angry members of the ‘mainstream Australia’ Francis assures us she speaks for. Many tweeters described her comments as ‘bigoted’ and “an embarrassment to Australia.”

“1930’s Germany just called. They want their policy back,” read one of thousands of anti-Family First messages.

Francis then played the victim. “Strange that I can be called a bigot for standing up for values that many people believe in yet others can deride my beliefs & that’s ok,” the confused candidate reacted.

“I’m not hurling abuse at homosexuals. I treat every person with personal respect. But we all have the right to stand firmly on principles.”

Erase and rewind… quick!

No doubt realising her homophobic slurs, which would not be tolerated in any other Australian political party except Family First, were causing a storm she is not equipped to deal with, Francis’s tweets have now been erased.

Also gone is a similar anti-gay-marriage rant from the same candidate on the Family First party’s official website, titled ‘Let’s end the gay marriage debate and protect children from abuse.’

The statement concluded: “The gay agenda is self-centred. Homosexuals who are pushing for this don’t care about children; they care about their selfish desire. Children in homosexual relationships are subject to emotional abuse and legitimizing gay marriage is like legalising child abuse.”

Family First has disendorsed its candidate for the Victorian federal seat of La Trobe after he posted comments online supporting same-sex marriage.

It comes as the socially conservative party's Queensland Senate candidate was slammed for a tweet that said children of same-sex parents were subject to a form of abuse.

Family First Victoria chairman Peter Lake said the candidate for La Trobe, David Barrow, had misrepresented his views to the party and had even signed a "secret affidavit" denouncing its values.

Advertisement: Story continues belowMr Lake told AAP the party on Monday became aware Mr Barrow had posted his views on same-sex marriage and other issues that were contrary to Family First policies on social networking site Twitter.

In his affidavit Mr Barrow said he supported the marriage of any committed partnership and same-sex couples should have the right to adopt, the ABC reported. He also said abortion was a woman's choice.

Mr Lake said the party looked into the matter and decided to act swiftly.

"Our suspicion is that he is doing this for self-interest and in terms of federal politics it's a team game, and if you don't play as a team member you hit the showers early," Mr Lake said.

The party did not respond in the same way against Queensland Senate candidate Wendy Francis, who on Monday insisted she was not homophobic, despite tweeting: "Legitimising gay marriage is like legalising child abuse."

The tweet, which she said was sent by someone in her office, has since been deleted, and was condemned by other Twitter users.

Attempting to clarify her views, Ms Francis told AAP children used in a "social experiment" were open to emotional abuse, like those of the stolen generations.

Mr Lake said the issues were unrelated.

He said the party had tried to contact Mr Barrow several times but he had failed to return any calls, so it notified him of the decision by email.

oh my god. I can't wait to put family first on the very bottom of my preferences when I vote.

haha I love how Josh Thomas on his twitter simply just said "I hate you". Mann he is just too witty sometimes

But yeah. honestly, this election is starting to scare me. I wish Labor hadn't f-ed up so much, sure there are alternatives, but people don't understand that. People seem to think a vote for the greens is a vote for labor - uh no its not, and sure theres preferences deals, but remember whoever you put down as your number 1 preference gets a small amount of money towards the party.
