Cornyn, Sessions to receive award from gay and lesbian GOP group

Sen. John Cornyn and Dallas Rep. Pete Sessions will receive an award from a prominent gay and lesbian Republican group tomorrow.

The Log Cabin Republicans will give the two lawmakers--who lead the Republicans' Senate and House campaign efforts, respectively--the Barry Goldwater Award at its fundraising reception and dinner. In a news release, the group said the award "recognizes leaders in the Republican Party who have served their nation with distinction in the model of the late Senator Barry Goldwater."

Neither Cornyn nor Sessions are in favor of same-sex marriage or repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," both of which the Log Cabin Republicans support. But last week, Cornyn defended his scheduled appearance at the reception, after the president of a social conservative group urged Cornyn to cancel.

"Respecting each other's dignity is not about ignoring those disagreements, but rather being honest about them, and working together where possible despite them," Cornyn wrote to Family Research Council's president, Tony Perkins.

The Log Cabin Republicans will dole out several awards tomorrow, including honoring Reps. Judy Biggert , R-IL, Anh 'Joseph' Cao, R-LA, Charles Djou, R-HI, and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-FL, as "steadfast supporters of the fight for equal rights."

Seems counter productive. if they want to advocate for a change in gop stances against LGBT americans, why are they giving awards to some of the most vitrolic rhetoric spewing homophobes on the federal level these days?

it is like "We will throw our support behind you, and praise you, even though you abuse, denegrate, and at times even support killing us?"

wasent sessions one of the gop shlocks that was supportive of the uganda kill the gays bill?
