Fire at gay bar deemed suspicious by authorities

Investigators are working to determine the cause of what they're calling a suspicious fire discovered early Sunday morning at a local gay bar.

A passing motorist reported the blaze about 7:15 a.m. after seeing flames on the back deck of Club XYZ, 1215 N. Central St., according to Knoxville Fire Department Capt. D.J. Corcoran.

The flames also spread to a doorway awning at the adjacent Knoxville Institute of Hair Design before the fire was extinguished.

"It never did get inside the buildings," Corcoran said.

The fire was suspicious, Corcoran said, declining to specify. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has been notified.

Anyone with information about a possible cause of the fire is asked to call the Knoxville Fire and Explosion Unit at 865-637-1386.
