It's probably no surprise that Democratic officials and gay rights groups are slamming Carl Paladino for his comments yesterday, but even top-of-the-ticket Republican candidates Harry Wilson and Dan Donovan are saying Paladino's comments about gays were wrong.

Donovan, the Staten Island District Attorney who hopes to become the next state attorney general, said via a campaign release: "Any statements of this nature are offensive. We should be fostering a dialogue on tolerance. These statements do not achieve that, and I do not agree with them.”

And the GOP's Wilson. who's campaigning to unseat incumbent Democrat Tom DiNapoli and become the new state comptroller, said: "I do not condone intolerance of any kind and categorically reject these hurtful statements. Furthermore, I strongly urge every candidate for statewide office to focus solely, as I have, on the problems of our state, particularly our massive and growing fiscal crisis."

Donovan and Wilson -- both of whom are largely seen among insiders as having a better chance of victory against their respective rivals than Paladino -- have had to campaign through questions about Paladino's email-forwarding habits and revelations that he once compared Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to Hitler. So this strikes me as a sign that with weeks to go before Election Day, they now officially and unequivocally view Paladino as radioactive.
