The Michigan Civil Rights Commission publicly condemned Assistant Attorney General Andrew Shirvell, the author of a blog targeting a college student.

Since April, Shirvell has authored a blog called the "Chris Armstrong Watch," targeting student body president Chris Armstrong at the University of Michigan because of his openly gay lifestyle.

"The Commission believes such conduct should not be tolerated from anyone, let alone a public official responsible for representing all people equally," said part of the resolution passed Tuesday.

"The Commission is also concerned about the scope and nature of the involvement of this individual in the execution of the work of the Office of the Attorney General."

Shirvell has been on administrative leave since late September and will face a discipline hearing upon his return. Shirvell is scheduled to be in Washtenaw County Court for a hearing on a requested personal protection order filed by Chris Armstrong, the student targeted by Shirvell.

Action News first reported on Shirvell on his blog on April15. Since then, the story has gained attention from many national news organizations, interest groups and elected officials.
