'Hoover' Biopic: Clint Eastwood Says No Joaquin Phoenix & No Gay Romance

The cinematic rumor mill was buzzing last month with news that quirky actor Joaquin Phoenix might team up with Leonardo DiCaprio for Clint Eastwood's upcoming J. Edgar Hoover biopic. Unfortunately, that rumor didn't last long. 'Hoover' producer Rob Lorenz quickly set the record straight, stating that the filmmaker has never even considered Phoenix for the role of Hoover's protégé and likely lover, Clyde Tolson.

Now Eastwood has spoken out about September's casting rumors, his interests in the material and just how much of Hoover and Tolson's so-called relationship is in the film.

Here's a hint: This won't be a testosterone-fueled romance, nor a spirited sequel to 'Brokeback Mountain...

Thank God. Although the title is misleading

Though all signs pointed toward a big, splashy, buzzed-about gay dramatic romance, Eastwood says that the film is about many aspects of Hoover's life: "He was a very complex person. The homosexual aspect is just one of many. I would say that's the least of his problems. But he was also very clever, whether rightfully or wrongfully, he was very clever about keeping himself in a certain position in life, so it is an interesting study." As The Playlist's early review of the script describes, there's a pent up sexual aspect, but not consummation. It's a safe approach to take -- there's no confirmation or proof of the relationship -- just a whole lot of information that seems to add up to lots of speculation.

Eastwood is an honest film maker. He's not in the business of speculation. I'm glad he's taking the high road. This film could easily be spun out of control.
