Gay marriage opponent criticized for campaigning with gay man

Lieutenant governor hopeful Richard Tisei and local state Senate candidate Ed McGrath dodged raindrops and an impromptu political attack while in Nobscot yesterday drumming up Republican support.

The pair toured the village's depressed shopping plaza and shook hands with struggling store owners, stopping first at Annie's Book Stop/Espresso Paulo for hot coffee and to check in with owner Paul Ashton.

"So how's business going in here?" asked Tisei, a state senator from Wakefield running on the GOP ticket with gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker.

Ashton reported sales were down this summer, which he said was "disappointing."

"Maybe people are reading less," he said.

McGrath, an attorney and Framingham resident, has set up a campaign office in the dilapidated Nobscot plaza at Edgell and Water streets.

He is challenging Ashland Democrat Karen Spilka for the 2nd Middlesex and Norfolk district. The district encompasses Ashland, Framingham, Holliston, Hopkinton, Medway and parts of Franklin and Natick.

On their afternoon tour, the candidates heard that TD Bank is doing well, with a new building being built across the street slated to open next spring.

"The Nobscot beautification program," joked Cathy Doyle, a financial services representative.

Tisei and McGrath were confronted inside the bank by Dawn Harkness, who twice ran unsuccessfully against outgoing Framingham state Rep. Pam Richardson.

Harkness, a lesbian who called herself a "moonbat liberal," demanded to know whether McGrath, who signed a petition against gay marriage, has "changed his mind on that."

McGrath said he has not.

"It's really kind of offensive to me that you're here campaigning with a gay man," she replied...
