Liberal clergy plan gay-rights protest in Phoenix

A group of liberal clergy and others who support gay rights are planning a protest Saturday morning outside St. Mary's Basilica in downtown Phoenix.

The occasion is a Catholic Diocese of Phoenix event adopting the Manhattan Declaration, a document that its backers say unites a variety of Christian traditions in defense of traditional marriage, life and religious freedom.

The issue of homosexuality and religion has taken on renewed importance in recent years. The Episcopal and Evangelical Lutheran churches have taken stands in support of gay clergy that have divided those denominations.

The liberal clergy group, known as No Longer Silent - Clergy for Justice, plans to place several hundred people along the sidewalk outside the basilica to challenge what they consider hateful rhetoric. They will protext while people leave an 8 a.m. Mass kicking off the Manhattan Declaration events...
