It seems like the only way of changing the culture is to allow gays in the military. In terms of showers and stuff I don't get it, there are plenty of examples of gays serving in militaries all over the world for them to follow.

The best way to change culture is to change the laws. People base their morals on the laws of their nation over time. This is a fact proven time and time again in not only American history, but the history of every single country and their people.

It's going to be a hard transition no matter how long they put it off. They should be given some time to figure out how to handle the logistics, but the cultural changes will not come easily and there's very little they can do about it except crack down hard on reported discriminators.

This is why it should have been a policy established by the Pentagon rather than politicians in Congress. It will require some transition...and the DOD needs to plan accordingly. If Congress simply says, "here do it tomorrow" there could be potential problems. The Pentagon is not worried about combat situations...if you are in a fox hole taking enemy fire you don't really care if the person next to you is a Martian, as long as they are on your side. What they are concerned about is the situations that may arise in on a Post type atmosphere.

But it's not like adaptation is a new thing for the U.S. Military. They faced the same challenges when they integrated African-Americans into the military. You actually had people that refused to recognize or salute black officers that out-ranked them. It was just the culture of the time.

Point being: should this actually come about there will be some rough times ahead, but after a while it will settle out.

And no...laws don't automatically change someone's thought process. Despite the Civil Rights Law there are still people that hate minorities...and it doesn't matter how many laws are passed nothing will change that. It is a sad reality of modern times. Laws may alter people's behavior, but they have no power on someone's thoughts.
