Gay people who are lucky enough to work for employers that extend health benefits to their same-sex partners are still at a disadvantage: they must pay an extra tax on the value of those benefits that heterosexual married couples do not pay.

But a small number of companies have begun covering those extra costs, including Barclays, which said Friday that it would begin reimbursing its employees based in the United States who opt to cover their same-sex domestic partners under the company’s medical, dental or vision plans. The new rule goes into effect next year.

Google announced a similar move earlier this year, and a handful of other organizations, including Cisco, Kimpton Hotels and the Gates Foundation also cover these costs. But the number of companies considering it may be on the rise...
