Police here have charged a Kentucky man with the April assault of a gay Miami University student outside an Uptown bar.

The assault last spring led to a hate crime rally on Miami’s campus. However, authorities did not charge the suspect with such a crime.

Police arrested 20-year-old Grant Rose of Alexandria, Ky., Jan. 13 for assault, a first-degree misdemeanor, after being identified in a photo lineup.

Rose is accused of assaulting Benjamin Collings, who was attending a charity event at the Stadium Bar when he and Rose got into a verbal confrontation in the rest room.

Rose allegedly made derogatory remarks toward Collings, according to police. The confrontation turned physical outside the bar, when Rose allegedly struck Collings and caused serious facial injuries, according to police...
