I think that until gay marriage is recognized by the ENTIRE United States, I don't think they'll ever allow gay service members' marriages to be recognized which is extremely pathetic because it means instead of the spouses being contacted, the family would be contacted first >_>

it all comes down to the repeal of DOMA. the department of justice made really no effort to properly defend it *they are required to defend federal law in court*, that it is clear that obama wants that repealed.

once that is overturned, it will not matter if there are still states that done allow gay marriage.

^ his position is "evolving" he says.

Obama's said many times that he wants DOMA repealed. I also personally believe Obama supports gay marriage...to me it would be surprising that given his background, he'd be in the minority of Democrats who don't. But he had to win a general election in 2008 and he's wants to again in 2012, so he's gonna tiptoe around the issue and figure out what position can get him the most votes.

I personally believe Obama believes in Gay-Marriage but will not support it politically, because it is a wedge issue for many on the right and he has little chance of winning a second term as President without at least part of the right in America. However, after he wins his second term, and cannot have a third, all bets are off.

I suspect that he will be more proactive on the issue once he is reelected, instead of just telling his DOJ to not properly argue in the DOMA case so it has a smooth time to being declared unconstiutional (the DOJ has shown itself capable of making strong arguements, they chose not to on this one likely to throw it in favor of being stripped from the law books by the courts.)

honestly, it is a smart plan. he will not be elegable for a third term anyways, so he can be more proactive. he is walking a fine line trying to get the basic necessities in order: he has already sent the econamy in a upward trend, and create more jobs than the 8 years of bush. Once relected, he has more freedom to pursue more sweeping social issues such as lgbt rights, gender equality rights (another thing neo-conservatives hate with a fervent passion), and make broader improvements to the broken systems of goverment we were handed by past administrations.
