After years of defeats, advocates for ordaining non-celibate gays and lesbians are making their most successful campaign yet in the Louisville-based Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

The potentially historic shift is taking place in a series of regional votes that began last year and will continue through mid-2011.

So far, 55 regional governing bodies, known as presbyteries, have approved an amendment to the church constitution that would effectively allow gays to be ordained as ministers, elders or deacons. The amendment was endorsed by a 373-323 vote at the Presbyterian General Assembly in Minneapolis in July 2010.

Only 40 or 41 presbyteries have voted to uphold current policy, according to independent Web sites tracking results. Current church law restricts ordination to those living "either in fidelity within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman or chastity in singleness...

Awesome!

So the current vote within the Presbyterian Church of the United States is current 55 (Presbyteries For Gay Ministers) to 41 (Presbyteries Against Gay Ministers), with 77 still to cast their vote.

Its looking good!

I especially like The Rev. Mark Baridon of Louisville's comment... "people are a lot more aware of gay and lesbian people and how many are already using their gifts in the church." And he said they have seen same-sex couples living monogamously and conclude that it is "consistent with a Christian lifestyle."
