I highly doubt he was gay. If he was, he never acted on it. Think about how Islam is today. He was a very orthodox Muslim. He probably believed if he was/acted on his alleged homosexuality he would burn for eternity.
In the article, it mentions that he worked as a hustler before he converted to Islam. I think there's a big problem with identifying someone as gay who doesn't claim the label him or herself. However, I don't see anything wrong in simply identifying that he had homosexual encounters.
