    I don't understand wouldn't a trans person just have their id fit their gender?

    Not necessarily. If someone takes the first step towards becoming transgender and starts hormone treatment, for example, their ID will not be automatically changed to reflect their new preferred gender. There's a lot of paperwork to be done and as far as I know*, only post-op transgenders can change their IDs to show the new gender.

    *but don't quote me on this.
