Umm yeah...it's official, Catholics have gone off the deep end now, or at least this one.

 

Not that the leaders of the Church don't tend to do the same thing, but in this instance, keep in mind that Bill Donahue runs the Catholic League and is really just one guy with a few nut-jobs giving him money. As much as he might like to, he doesn't really represent the Catholic Church in any way.

 

south park did a easter episode about him... HE KILLED JESUS. which was a highly accurate portrayal of him. in real life, if jesus came back, and stood in the way of donahue's power, he would slit jesus's throat without a second thought.

 

This guy seems to have some issues...

 

This one went off the deep end years ago, but I agree in that it is not all Catholics doing this.

Yeah, the Catholic League is seperate from the Catholic Church, and recently seems to be, as the article correctly points out, "essentially a one-man shop named Bill Donohue".

The League seems to represent the extreme right wing of Roman Catholics, not by any means the mainstream. Its also worthy to mention that Donohue has increased the league's membership drastically since becoming its leader in 1993 -- whether this is due to his 'magnetism' or the belief by Catholics that they are increasingly threatened as a faith community -- who knows.

However, the membership is still quite small... less than 1% of American Catholics belong.

I know a lot of Catholics that have a problem with this guy, either way he's an extremist in my mind.

 

he basically blows his top whenever anything in american society does not fit his interpretation of his religion's views.

he is our 'Mary Whitehouse', screaming his head off at anything on tv, films, or in the world of books he doesnt like.
