A beloved bookstore in the heart of San Francisco's gay and lesbian community is set to close by the end of the month.

A Different Light bookstore opened in the Castro district in 1985 and soon became a social hub that celebrated gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered writers and readers.

The bookshop often hosted art shows, reading groups and community events, including an appearance by Olympic diver Greg Louganis, who drew a block-long crowd when promoting his autobiography.

A bookshop manager tells the San Francisco Chronicle sales will determine the store's final day.

The Northern California Booksellers Association's executive director says online book sales have prompted the demise of many gay bookstores. The association says the store is likely the state's last gay bookshop selling new titles.

That's sad to hear...it's true though. With the amount of gay novels found on Amazon, few go to bookstores anymore. Especially gay bookstores because they are so few and far between.
