hope she doesnt give in to bigottry.

people need to learn not to point fingers at others who are simply living their lives.

Nobody should be harassed. But...I do admit, I would be upset if I was going to be a straight mom and didn't get the same discount just because I was straight. If the owner was only giving the discount to straight moms, the gay moms would be pissed. It goes both ways....

Yeah I think it should be to all Moms...I think she should do it like different each week. Lesbian moms last week, single moms this week, married moms the week after. I dunno :S

Knowing your politics, I wonder how you'd react if it was a deal that excluded lesbians. You could argue it's outreach because everything else mightn't have gone perfectly for them, but it still seems a bit disconcerting. I think businesses are their own business, but I don't really like discrimination, whether positive or negative.

As I said in the other thread that was posted about this, if we expect shop owners not to be allowed to discriminate against us for being queer, we can't really have them discriminating against people for being straight, either.

However, that doesn't give people an excuse to be jerks and harass her.

Obviously the store owner's heart was in the right place, but in the end we want equality, not special treatment.

An article could be titled "Store owner denies discounts to customers based on sexual orientation" and a gay rights activist would open up that article so quick, assuming it's the homosexuals being denied the discount, and it's THIS story.

Equality means equality, not special treatment.

While I agree with you I'm also kind of torn with this issue.

A lot of businesses give special treatment to a certain group in order to up their sales. Clubs do this specially with girls and some movie theaters do it with younger kids.

That being said, I wouldn't know where to draw the line. Its a complicated subject if you ask me.

This is true. And she is allowed to do whatever she wants. Also, any woman can walk in and say they're a lesbian mother, so who knows how this will turn out. Regardless, it does not justify awful behavior like threatening.

Ummm, I think the discount is discriminatory. Celebrating feminism and diversity by offering a discount to only a select group of women? Doesn't make sense to me. Then again, neither do the intimidating phone calls.

I'm not sure but could it be that she offers the discount because the financial burden on same sex couples is greater so she wanted to offer something to help negate that in the same way Google did with their employee benefits? Just a thought.
