the church did not create the concept of marriage.

Therefore, the church cannot own marriage.

therefore, churches are irrelevant to marriage, since marriage has been a legal institution, not a religious institution. Churches just create their own after-market dogma and liturgy for it.

Not everyone is religious and not everyone wants to get married in a church.

The article seems pretty right on. Little known fact: for centuries, the church had nothing to do with marriage. There wasn't even a marriage ceremony. It wasn't until the complete merging of church and state in the Roman empire that the church got into the marriage business. That ceremony then became legally recognized.

In the end, I think this is really a religious freedom issue. By not allowing gay marriage, the state is showing preference for a particular group of people's religious beliefs about the issue.

Check out the history of marriage as a sacrament sometime. Pretty interesting stuff.

Let's not forget where Dr. Paul said, "why doesn’t it go to the individuals?" The government has no place in defining the relationship between consenting adults. It should protect everyone's right to live and love freely

marriage, as a legal institution belongs 100% in the goverment's hands. that being said, if religious institutions wants to continue to use their post creation-of-the-idea-of-marriage litergy and sacriment, that is why we have 'freedom of religion.' If the church doesn't like gay people getting married, it is none of their frickan business.
