All eyes on NY as pressure mounts for gay marriage | Golf Talk

The pivotal decision of legalizing gay marriages in New York will most likely rest in the hands of two Republican Catholics from New York’s conservative upstate areas.

These two senators are Hudson Valley Poughkeepsie Senator Stephen Saland who is a widely respected veteran legislator and Buffalo Senator Mark Grisanti who is one of the young Republican breeds who rode the conservative-filled 2010 GOP tide.

The Senate Republicans defeated in 2009 the gay marriage bill but Saland and Grisanti’s votes are being eyed by gays and lesbians as the two are still clearly undecided on their stand on the bill which may get another chance in the next few days....

...The 67-year old Saland, who will be making one of the most difficult votes during his 21 years may have spent years in contemplation according to his colleagues. The 46-year old Grisanto however only had a few months to think about his career’s most difficult vote.

“It’s something I think about almost every second of every day in the last couple weeks,” he told his hometown Buffalo News. “If I take the Catholic out of me, which is hard to do, then absolutely they should have these rights … it has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with my own personal beliefs.”

I've e-mailed both senators in a last ditch attempt to do my part in swaying them to vote in favor of it, going so far as to take a religious viewpoint as well as a separation of church and state POV because I just find it so sad that religion which theoretically should be about morality is the main reason these people are undecided if giving people rights is a good idea or not.

I would think the moral conscience of a fifth grader would know the answer is 'yes' that it's moral to give rights and not deny them, but I guess this is how prejudice cloaked in the guise of religion distorts basic moral common sense like that...sigh.

"If I take the Catholic out of me...then they should absolutely have these rights." Right there should be a big hint to legalize it. You are a politician, not a priest.
