Dunno the situation here...by that I mean, I dunno whether to believe her, or Southwest. But really it depends if they'd be the same to a straight couple.

I feel like I'm only getting half the story here, but I don't agree with someone--regardless of their sexuality--getting told to leave for simply kissing. Now, I don't know the escalation involved. It isn't mentioned that it was anything above a simple kiss. Like I said, I feel like I'm only getting half the story.

Still, I see heterosexual couples kissing, holding hands, embracing, etc., in public all the time and no one ever gives them odd looks or tells them to leave. The same isn't true about homosexual couples around here. There's nothing wrong with expressing your love for your partner. I do have a problem with it getting out of hand, however. I don't think anyone should make out in public.

If this was a simple kiss, then I believe that the flight attendant did overreact. I hope that is the case because I love Leisha Hailey and I don't want her to be a bitch IRL.

Southwest has had more than a few issues regularly, and it's in part due to the culture at Southwest where employees are given a lot of autonomy and entrusted to make good decisions. Some employees obviously have made decisions based on personal values that haven't been good decisions for the Customers or for Southwest itself.

I have tremendous respect for Southwest as a company and I'm pretty confident that they'll take appropriate steps to remedy the situation. They are far from homophobic; it seems like 3/4 of their male flight attendants are poofs

    ^ This.

However, if they were a) blatantly making out in front of the whole plane, or b) throwing a tantrum after being asked not to do so, I don't really feel bad about it. As I often tell straight people, I don't think excessive PDA is kosher whether you're gay OR straight.

^ Hmmmm...based on this response, I'm almost siding with the airline on this one, without knowing any further information.

Gay people can be unreasonable assholes too.

Making out in public is always inappropriate, whether you're straight or gay. I don't mind people giving quick kisses or holding hands, though. If passengers said it was "excessive," that may change things, but what's their idea of "excessive"? I know plenty of people who think a peck on the lips between two members of the same sex is excessive. A lot of people around here get their panties in a bunch when same-sex couples hold hands. What if the attendant wasn't necessary homophobic, but the passengers were?

Hailey came out and said today that it was "one chaste kiss", which is why the couple basically threw a fit about being called on it.

I have to say, if I gave my lover one kiss on a plane and someone came to give me the "cease and desist, homo, this is a FAMILY plane" spiel, I would have flipped about it too.

The more I hear about it, the more it sounds like heteros claiming anything that interferes with their personal fantasies about how homosexuality doesn't exist shouldn't belong in public.

To which I hate to say - sticking feathers up your butt does not make you a chicken, and forbidding gay people from kissing in public does not a damn for preventing homosexuality in private.

And if kissing one's spouse in public is considered "too risque" for commercial air, why don't we all just don a burqa right now and get it over with?
