My school has a fraternity like that. Now they are trying to get a sorority as well.

I've heard of several schools that have started them in the past few years. I think it's a great step.

See, I disagree with what they are doing. Gays can be in fraternities as it is, so I think that trying to be separated is just going away from our goal to be equal.

Now you see, there has to be a reason why they are being/have been made and I feel that is because the general consensus of a fraternity is the hyper-heterosexual society for men. Usually that tends to equal ridicule and shaming for gay people, even if that never happens, because of general public opinion.

Besides, if gay men want to make their own fraternity then that is their choice while it is the choice of another to join currently established fraternities. I think for true equality to happen the gay community must learn to not be so afraid of the straight community and vice versa.

I'm with Rinamir on this one, but if the fraternity becomes a safe place for young LGBT students to chill, hang out and be themselves without being harangued or harassed, then so much the better.

Yeah, we had one of those at Alabama...they were called SAE's.

Why would a university be weighing this option? Normally the way it works is a group of like minded students gets together and applies for a charter...from somewhere.

But, I hope it works out for them or whatever. Like minded people should get together and feel comfortable in their own skin, so to speak.

I think there was one at the U of MN that started back when I was there ('93-'98). I guess it's fine to have one and it's not exclusive for gay guys.

    I'd join one.

Why? Well, just knowing I'm among men similar to me in sexuality would be awesome. No having to hide who I am to try and "look straight" or trying to avoid getting beaten up by straight homophobic members of a different frat house...

Frat houses are already "divided" up... men and women frat houses. Why NOT have a GLBT (or at least a G and L) specific frat house? As other posters said, if a gay person didn't want to join, they could join another one.

On principle, I wouldn't join a fraternity regardless of whether or not it claims itself to be progressive.

    On what principle?
