The Daily Mail is itself an extremely right-wing paper, so it seems as though they're shooting themselves in the foot if they decided to publish that story.

Yes, I thought it was very odd that the Daily Mail of all papers should be publishing something this damning of its readers. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Bigottry is too deeply ingrained in the right wing mind for them to care.

progress can never be achieved when people cling to outdated lies.

Which is why you constantly see right wingers get in trouble for racist/homophobic/sexist/hatefilled statements, but the only time people call out liberals for it, it tends to be because the people calling out liberals dont seem to understand that people not conforming to their, the right wingers, religious belief does not qualify in any sense as religious bigottry.

I love it when the world finally starts righting itself, no pun intended.

Aside from the fact that I question the validity of this "study" I wonder if you guys would trumpet it so loudly if it was lefty's getting attacked? How is it that one will get warned around here if they bash another persons faith or even a religion as a whole but not political views which are just as much of a choice?
When I debate here I attack an idea not a persons belief. I challenge their premise but try not to belittle them for what they believe. Yet consistently I see those that are more conservative like myself maligned and spoken of like LGBT conservatives dont exist. Its getting old and its getting wearisome. I know most of my military friends are conservative and they all by the simple nature of the jobs they hold are highly intelligent. They are also the most open minded people I have ever met. I myself am far above average in intelligence and education level. Yet I personally am Libertarian with conservative leanings and am registered Republican for voting purposes. Frankly I am getting tired of the consistent petty snipes I read almost daily here.

    BWAAAHAHAHAHAHAAAHAHAHAAHAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love seeing stuff like this, always makes my day better.

Im just waiting for someone to link certain religions to IQ, and see the firestorm really happen.

One comment I want to make regarding the second article; how the one person quoted tried to make the claim that religion and race go together - the purest of bullsh!t. One does not choose where one is born or what race one is born of - one DOES choose religion. On the global scale, the SOLE reason we see religion dominant in countries is directly tied to the educational level within a country. Look at the US - the education system has been getting the snot beat out of it the last few years, and religion has been the one doing the beating, trying to get stronger because of it. Same with many of these 'third world' countries - religion has always fought educating the masses; for those guiding religion realize the threat education is to them. Dollars to doughnuts, if someone makes a study of ALL people, regardless of race, focusing on those with vs without religion, the numbers will be similar between races - the more educated a person is, the less they will feel the need for religion. We ARE all human, after all, we ALL feel the crave, the need for more, but all too many of us grasp onto that which is nothing but hollow promises guising lies designed to manipulate us.

Possibly. I'd rather be an elitist educated hoity-toity douchebag than a hate-mongering, prejudiced dunce with a hammer complex. Of course, we all know it isn't really that simple.

I'm just going to say that I'm not at all surprised by this. The radical fringe of the Tea Party genuinely views Obama's ivy league education as a negative. In 2008 Palin and McCain, and a good portion of the republican party, hung on "Joe the Plumber's" every word for quite some time. I think that says more than enough.

That's why in the first sentence it calls it a "Controversial Study". You absolutely make valid points, but when dealing with a 15,000 person sample size, things tend to get generalized. I totally agree that in a debate, arguments should be won by the merit of the argument, not by belittling your opponent; I would never come right out an say "anti-gay people on average are less intelligent", but when a peer-reviewed scientific study supports that statement, I have no problem posting it. Also, religion and political views are totally different animals.

PS: I am also a military member, and I bet most of your military friends are conservative because Republicans give the military way bigger budgets.

Let me say right now that we enforce the same standards of respect when it comes to religion and politics. I hypothesize that you take the political attacks more personally than the religious ones, and thus see our policy on religious posts as more strict than our policy on political posts because you're more likely to be offended by the latter.

You say you're tired of the petty snipes you read here almost daily. Your right to feel tired of it. But most of us here are tired of attacks against us that go well beyond petty snipes coming from homophobic conservatives, be they politicians or regular citizens. Yes, non-homophobic conservatives exist, so we shouldn't generalize. But when so much vitriol against us comes from one single group, how can you expect people to not start to hold negative opinions of that group?

We're not saints. We're not perfect. We're not purely logical beings who can have empathy for anyone on the basis of them being human. We're flawed, we hold grudges, and we can't always hide them. I'm not saying that to justify ad hominem attacks or belittling generalizations. I'm saying that because I'm tired of posts expecting people to completely detach from their experiences, as if their feelings of anger and resentment aren't valid and they shouldn't feel them. We shouldn't police others' emotions; we shouldn't expect them to not feel hurt when they have been wronged by a specific group. For that reason, I won't tell you to "get over it" regarding your feelings of being tired of the snipes against conservatives on this forum. But for the same reason, I'll politely request that you try to understand where those you accuse of those snipes are coming from.

Ok Owen as I have a great deal of respect for you I am hard pressed to say I cant agree with some of what you said. First of all I do understand that conservatives are much more likely to be homophobic then liberals and I can defiantly understand why people in the LGBT community are like to A) Hold hard feelings for conservatives and B) Align with liberal politics.
I will also admit that yes I am not religious but VERY political thus more likely to take it personally. However though I have been on here only a year in that year I have seen SEVERAL threads in which a person was warned about possibly offending someones religion and yet I cannot recall even a single thread where the consistent bashing of conservatives has been chastised by EC staff. (The only time someone has stepped in is when it got to petty insults over a HUGE portion of the thread but it was a warning to stop fighting not that the bashing that started the argument in the first place was wrong)
You say that LGBT people have a reason to be upset with conservatives yet I could point out the very same things about most major religions yet if the attacks I see on conservatives by a few of the more venomous people here were EVER directed at a religion I can bet dollars to donuts that a warning at the least would appear in that thread and fast.
Religion and Politics are both chosen belief systems and ones that are often closely tied into what a person feels is a large part of who they are. The only difference I see is that religion as a whole in society not just here has this aura sacredness that people dont want to mess with.
If you dont agree with my take on things that is fine. To be honest I didnt expect anything to come of that statement nor do I think it will change how people do things around here. Its all going to be a matter of do I want to continue to come to a support site that allows the bashing of some of my core beliefs simply because an ignorant few taint them? Since I am not staff here nor do I think any of the staff will do anything about what I have said I think that I might just silence myself after this thread is done. I really wont try to fight a battle that cant be won. I will chose to deal with the snipes because for the most part I love this site and what it stands for. I gain more hope then irritation from it and I find that I like the majority of the people despite being the minority in my political views. I simply hope that my concerns will give some people pause and maybe get a few to actually think before bashing a group as a whole. This site as far as I understand it is to build each other up not rip each other down but when it comes to this one section people seem to forget that.

Bad journalism annoys me. All the article seems to really say is that lower intelligence is linked to bigotry, nothing about "right-wing values" (many of which have nothing to do with bigotry!)

Just to wander off topic - somewhat --

Owen - You nailed it pretty much in one, I think.

Bibliophile - I haven't been here a particularly long time, and I will be the first to admit, I get.... vocal, when it regards either politics or religion, precisely because both have unwanted influence on my life, even as a Canadian. The catch is, when I attack something, I do so concisely - I make surgical strikes, going directly after the root of whatever it is I may be 'attacking'. I try very hard to hold myself to the standard of 'if I say something, I can back that up'.

When it comes to topics regarding LGBTQ, the facts of the matter are, the groups that actively resist and attempt to subvert rights for LGBTQ ARE the religious right and ARE the conservative right - which most often are one and the same. When we, as defenders of LGBTQ, target this base fact, it isn't a personal thing - that is to say, we aren't calling people, to borrow a term, sinful beings that are going to burn in hell.

    No.

We are the ones that want nothing more than simply be treated equally and fairly. We want to marry whom we love. Some want to be the persons we are within.

The fault lies directly with those who believe in a faith, much of which has been scientifically proven to be fiction with the rest being unprovable and fantastically so, whose written mandate IS to deny us our rights - and indeed, at the most fundamental of those religious beliefs, enslave or destroy us.

And you choose to throw your lot in with these kind of people.

Yea, I take that kinda crap a bit personally. However, I find it far more effective to keep a cool head and disassemble each and every 'argument' presented by this group that, as a whole, works to subvert what little we have gained. If you are part of these groups, and you support them, then you support their efforts to send us back to the stone age.

And really, a part of you knows this. If you call yourself bisexual, then you have already had to have wrestled with the thought within your own mind that you engage - or want to engage - in acts that those of the religious/political right hate and want to prevent, for no valid reason other than 'their beliefs say so'. You feel personally attacked because when we do go on the 'offensive', what we target IS at the core of your beliefs - and yet, what is at the core of the beliefs of the right IS to attack us. To control us.

Are the right incorrect on everything? No, I personally wholeheartedly support the right (AND Responsibility) to bear arms, a reasonable government and so on - but MUCH of what they say, MUCH of what they do, MUCH of what they want is contrary to what the LGBTQ in particular have been working to. This is nothing more than historically proven fact. This is why the 'left' gets the support of the LGBTQ far more readily.

Ultimately, if you feel its personal, you will do yourself much more good to pause for yourself, and Analise just WHY it is you feel it is a personal attack. If you truly let yourself examine it logically and rationally, you might be shocked at what you find.

You clearly didnt read some key parts of what I said. First of all I am LIBERTARIAN. Not sure if you know what that means as far as US politics goes but if not Google or wiki it. I said I hold many conservative views but that does not mean all. Only and idiot would support movements to push back his own rights, and I am far from that.

I am conservative in my views on social programs, the right to bear arms, and economic policy. That is about all I can think of for the moment and frankly I am conservative by my OWN countries standards because I know the term differs somewhat from place to place. Though I can safely say that we share a similar idea of what the word means as I dont think it differs too greatly between our countries.
The idea that one must support a group or not rather then, I dont know change it from within is rather a simplistic take on the matter. It really comes down to the fact that I think proper foreign policy, a balanced budget, and the right to bear arms are slightly more vital then gay marriage or stopping bullying. Because if a country goes down economically well civil rights wont count for anything if you cant work or eat and if you dont have the means to defend those rights from those that would harm you or an over zealous government then how can you call them rights to begin with?
I am totally against any law that inhibits the freedom of anyone to do anything that does interfere with the rights of others or cause harm to people, animals or the environment. The term harm and the degree of it are up for debate in each case. Franky I find most of the implications you made insulting but I hope that cleared some of this matter up.
