So I got talking to someone online (we were given the prompt question 'how do you feel about gay marriage?'). The conversation made me smile, so I thought i'd share it with you

    stranger: eeeww
    you: I'm glad it exists
stranger: just no its too much its wrong
    you: fuck you
    stranger: whaat your gay?
    you: yes, i am
you: mind telling me how my life affects you?
stranger: i dunno i have nothing against them as long as theyr like ' oh im gay i have to tell the world im gay and maybe do some riots cause other people dont like me' i mean if your gay keep it to yourself...
stranger: have a boyfriend and be happy with him no need to share it with world
you: *girlfriend. Why should i keep it to myself, you think my family and friends don't want to know if i'm in love?
stranger: no, the family friends...it's fine...but when you gay people do riots and all that thing thats just too much
    you: lol what riots?
you: do you know how much violence is committed against gay people?
you: are you talking about pride parades?
stranger: thats only because some gay people just want to share it with the whole world that theyr gay..not like anyone cares
    stranger: yeah
you: you clearly care if you think we shouldn't be able to marry
you: if nobody cares why do i have to keep it to myself?
stranger: you wouldnr be able to have kids tho
you: adoption, ivf, plus not everybody wants to have kids
you: do you think infertile people shouldn't be allowed to marry?
stranger: adoption? do you even realize what sort of life that kid would have?..
    you: yes
stranger: i dont mind the marriage i told you already
you: it would have two loving parents instead of being in a children's home
    you: where are you from?
stranger: yeah? i mean this kid you want to adopt..it's already been ditched...and it wants the perfect life...having mummy and daddy not mummy and muummy
stranger: and also as you might have noticed society is cruel so that if that kid will be in school other kids will just bully that kid and it wont have a normal life...and all because two gay cauple wanted a baby
you: well, frankly, there aren't enough 'mummys and daddys' stepping up to adopt
you: there are lots of kids with gay parents where i'm from
you: they're healthy, happy, don't get bullied
you: and even if they did, you punish the bullies not the parents
stranger: what? do you even know what bullying is?
stranger: yeah? but the kid will be broken anyway and you wont care because you wanted a kid
you: how will he or she be broken exactly?
stranger: the bullies..they will chanche her/his life for ever it might just seem like it's just kids but its not like this at all...
you: have a read of this if you have time Kids with Lesbian Parents May Do Better Than Their Peers - TIME
    stranger: no
    you: ok, stay close-minded
you: i was bullied as a child
you: because of people like you might i add
    you: and i'm not broken
    you: i'm very happy
stranger: oh really? guess what? i was bullied too
stranger: and do you know why?
stranger: because my mother was a prostitute
you: I'm sorry about that, but can't you see you're growing up to continue the cycle?
stranger: i loved her..but it just killed me..i mean the kids even tho it as ages ago..i can still remember how painful it was
stranger: going to schoo..not havinf friends..even its been 20 years i just still have that pain
you: where do you think those kids learnt to have those ideas about your mother? From their parents and from society
you: we should teach kids to accept difference
you: rather than just avoid being different
stranger: well..it's a beautiful idea and the world would of been so much better for both of us..but let's br realistic it will never happen
    you: i think it can
    you: i've seen it happen
you: the kids i know don't treat gay people the way they did when i was little and i'm only 20
stranger: yeah...maybe but the people will always be people
you: there'll always be assholes in the world yes
you: and they'll always find something to pick on, whether its a kids parents, or ginger, or a speech impediment or whatever
you: But we shouldn't let assholes control us
stranger: i'm sorry about this gay hate..i guess im an asshole too
    you: its ok
you: i understand where you were coming from
you: just don't give power to bullies by agreeing with them, yeah?
    stranger: yeah..
you: Its been a pleasure speaking to you. Take care.
stranger: bye  i hope you will not meet any assholes like me in the future any more
    you have disconnected.

That's pleasant to hear about  It's always a nice feeling to get someone to view something from a new, better angle.

Sometimes all it takes is just talking to someone who is gay & doesnt fit the incorrect assumptions that a person has for that person to realize that they have the incorrect assumptions. THIS is how the world changes, one person at a time. Sure its slow as all hell, but change usually is, & it is usually well worth it!

I've always believed that most people are only one positive conversation away from starting to see things differently and becoming more accepting. It's nice to see an example of that.
