Controversial School Assembly

Well that is beyond ridiculous. I don't even know what to say. If the school isn't upset about them spreading hate, shouldn't they be upset about them spreading inaccurate information in a school? Gay doesn't automatically mean death at 42 (why did they pick 42?) and mud doesn't just appear on wedding dresses if you're not a virgin.

I don't think that religious views should be shared in public school assemblies like this. I can't believe no one stopped this

 

As much as I like to take advice from a guy in a band that no one has ever heard of, this just seems dumb. I didn't realize that a person could be a dumb as this guy, thank you for coming into my life and lowering the bar.

 

You know, a video of it has been posted online, but I haven't watched it yet. I'm afraid to. I might hate the world afterwards.

 

Didn't you know? The meaning of life is 42. And thus since gays don't have life, their "life" ends at 42 when true life begins

I saw a picture of one of the band memebers, and he had tattoos.

I wanted to buy him a bible, and put like 100 sticky flags around the edge of the page where in leviticus is says that it is a abomination against God to mark ones flesh.

I would also put a sticky note that says "may God have mercy on your abomination soul."

 

My blood is boiling, I am so mad at this man. IT IS A PUBLIC SCHOOL! They aren't supposed to teach religion! About the Lady Gaga Born This Way song - she isn't saying that being black is the same as being gay, she means that you shouldn't be treated any different for your sexuality, race, gender, whatever. Being gay certainly isn't the same as being black- there's a difference between skin tone and sexuality OBVIOUSLY. How on Earth is she promoting sexual deviancy? Or sinning? She's wanting equality - for the LGBT population to be treated the same as the heterosexual population and that we never made a choice to be like we are today.

The average lifespan of a gay man is 42. Hmmm, maybe it's the fact that 1 in 4 gay kids in America attempt or seriously contemplate taking their own lives? Maybe if society would stop treating us like mentally ill perverts who deserve to be bullied the suicide rate wouldn't be so high. And I love how he fails to back this statement up with facts or reasons why the average lifespan is only 42 years.

This man is an idiot. I wish I could have been there. I would have started an argument with him, and by the looks of his shabby presentation, I would have won that argument.

 

it is impossible to win an arguement against a fundie christian, because they believe that claiming that they have 'god on their side' means they win every time.

It's not impossible per-say, I do know an argument that you can use, but it is a little offensive and I don't want to get banned or upset anyone here who happens to be christian. I may be a jerk, but I don't want to persecute anyone for their beliefs just to make a point.

 

Agreed...their is NO WAY my school would allow this....They would have pulled them off stage. :bang:

 

The fact that someone at the school was so pious that they believed that spreading a "good choices", or "anti-bullying" message requires the use of religion is where they are making their mistake. It sends the message, to me anyway, that unless you accept christian religious doctrine into your life, your life is somehow tainted and that this is the cause of society's ills. That's utterly ridiculous of course.

I thought people weren't allowed to promote religion in schools.

So very pathetic and yet also so very dangerous. Many school kids may be doubting themselves and as such messages like this can be so very harmful.

 

From my experience, the vast majority of people in small rural Midwest towns (say, population < 5,000; "Dunkerton" is listed as 749) either could care less, take a neutral stance, or very much so prefer the promotion of religion in public schools. In such cases, court precedent and, sometimes, law, mean nothing.

 

I've heard of this band. The main guy is an insane young fundie trying to get youth to go along with his horrible crap. I think he's connected with one of those awful "Christian" programs for young people that claims to be welcoming and understanding, but actually is just intolerant and hateful.
At least the district seems to have handled it the right way. They should have probably stopped it before it started, but I'm glad they're acknowledging something went wrong. Dunkerton isn't terribly far from me. Maybe a couple hours. This is a pretty liberal part of the state (liberal for a rural area), generally, and it's only a short drive from the big metro area of Waterloo-Cedar Falls, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's more on the left-leaning side.

 

I would have punched this band square in the faces if I was there.

 

what I found most disturbing was that the faculty did not put a stop to it when it divided the girls from the boys, took each group to different places, and did not let teachers or other staff go.

that is a big no-no. the school could have been sued if something went bad.

 

When I was in high school my school brought in a similar group (not a band, though) for an assembly. They weren't as over the line as this group was, but the whole thing was basically extremely conservative Christians ranting.

At first I was just mildly annoyed by the blatant religious message I was being forced to listen to in school, but part way through things got crazy. They essentially told us that if we didn't "welcome Jesus into our lives" we would end up becoming school shooters, and if we watched porn we would become serial killers. I wish I was making this lunacy up.

Things got kind of creepy at the end (If I remember right, there was some sort of pole and a song). I wanted to get up and leave so badly throughout the entire thing, but nobody else was and I had no idea what to do. And I kinda wanted to stay just to watch the trainwreck that was the whole thing.

Afterwords, I looked online at that groups website and found that they worked with an "ex-gay" organization. I can't remember what the group was called anymore...

There was a lot of "what the hell did we just sit through" reaction from other students, who were just as offended as I was over being berated by some religious lunatics while we were supposed to be at school. But I couldn't believe how many people were talking about what a great assembly it was, and how wonderful their message was. They saw absolutely no issues with using school time to allow a religious group to preach to the students.

I love my home, but these people are brainwashed. It's sad, scary, and embarrassing.

The good news? The school decided never to bring a group like them in again.

 

When I was in high school, we wouldn't let a speaker come because we found out she was going to talk to us about the evils of abortion.
A lot of people got really upset about it, but in the end, I have no doubt it was the right choice.
