The Archbishop of Canterbury is the Head of the Worldwide Anglican (Episcopal) Church which is the third largest Christian church in the world today.

    WHY DOES THIS MATTER:
The Archbishop of Canterbury in not so many words is resigning because he has been unable to hold the Worldwide Church together which is splitting over the issues of Homosexuality and Women priests. The Canadian, American and a lesser extent the British arms of the church are moving towards Gay Blessings/Marriages while the African, Asian and South American parts of the church are against both.

This Archbishop, while pro-gay rights, tried to be as moderate as possible to hold the church together. Attempting to find a way for both sides of the debate to exist.

The fear is the new Archbishop will be the current Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, who is the deputy to the Archbishop of Canterbury. Sentamu, who was born in Uganda, is known for his homophobic views and has been a vocal opponent of the UK government's plans to legalize gay marriage.
