as a Catholic who struggles with being gay, or as a lesbian who is struggling with her Catholic faith, either way I still have a lot of empathy for that priest.

I find it disturbing that:

1. priests are often assumed to be pedophiles simply because some pedophiles have made use of the priesthood to gain access to children; most priests are not pedophiles, for the record.

2. people do not believe or cannot respect an individual's decision to remain celibate in order to be a priest, monk or nun. it's possible and not always unhealthy - some people are called to celibacy and some are not. just because we aren't doesn't mean that they can't be.

3. that in light of the pedophilia scandals of late, the Church is refusing to ordain or welcome to religious orders anyone who has same-sex attraction - in other words, suggesting that a gay person is less able/likely to make a committed choice to be celibate

4. people seem to assume that if he's gay, he's probably a pedophile. homosexuality and pedophilia are completely different things. no we should not lock up all priests. no we should not lock up all homosexuals.

It does make good points. Especially parallels between this case and the story of Julie Amero. Yes, it could have been an accident or a prank, or even deliberate sabotage. And yes, there's no love lost between us and top hierarchs of the Catholic Church... But that doesn't mean giggles at a gay Catholic accidentally outing himself help anyone. If it's indeed what he did. Not all gay priests and parsons are Teds Haggards (although if that's what he was, well, he just've reaped what he sow.)

Personally, I think someone who takes a vow of celibacy, which means they can never marry, are not suposed to have sex, and never are suposed to father children, should not comment on sex, marriage, or raising of children.

I'm actually disappointed that people are laughing about this. Almost as if it's only the fact he is a priest that gives you permission to laugh or look down on it. I think the real problem here is that porn was accidentally shown to kids. Which should be a problem regardless if it was straight or gay porn. The fact that the priest might be gay should not be the issue many are making it out to be.

Really? My family is Catholic (I myself have been more or less an atheist for years now) and my Dad - a very strict Catholic - often uses the argument gay people are meant to become preists (i.e. God gives people sexual urges that they aren't allowed to fulfill as a sign that they should become celibate and join the presithood). I'm surprised he missed something like this, actually, and I wonder where he got that argument from.

I've looked it up once before. Gay men, strangely enough, are explicitly disallowed from the priesthood no matter how celibate they can be.

Your dad's argument makes complete sense, but he's forgetting how non-inclusive the Church truly is.

It's not really that. A man no one here knows anything about (beyond the facts in the article) allegedly did something really stupid and really creepy. Yes, the fact he happens to be a priest (and might be gay) adds certain humorous quality to the incident. Yes, Catholic hierarchy has a despicabe tendency to whitewash its members for far, far worse offences. But no, it doesn't mean he's automatically guilty unless proven innocent.
