This should be treated no differently than if a group wanted to advertise skin pigmentation so that someone could be ex-black.

Why shouldn't those ads go up? I certainly don't like them, but I see no reason for them to be censored. Freedom of speech is meaningless if it doesn't include the freedom to offend.

I would equate it more to someone advertising the use of starvation dieting or binging and purging behavior to lose weight... obviously a bad idea, but someone who is desperate enough or has low enough self-esteem might get caught up in it.

I don't think we can shut down these groups entirely, but I am uncertain about allowing them to advertise publicly. It's not about freedom of speech if they are targeting a specific population in order to encourage what is essentially self-damaging behaviors.

Read about this earlier. All I can say is that it's such a stupid idea.

Well one reason is that they are blatant lies.
Not only is homosexuality not classified as a disease, those 'therapies' aren't supported by any credible medical or psychological association.
To propagate the lie that a certain part of the population is ill is defamatory.

The line has to drawn somewhere, and as far as I'm concerned these ads are on the wrong side of it. Freedom to offend, maybe, but not freedom to genuinely encourage harmful practice.

I was looking for words to say this. "Encouraging harmful practice" is perfect. Ridiculous, you're certainly not aptly named =P

Its sad to think that many people would've actually followed-up on that ad.

Boris Johnson blocked the ads from appearing on busses, saying it harms London's reputation as a diverse and tolerant city.

Since we are talking about 'freedom of speech', I must observe that only an American would make such a comment; as most of the rest of the civilized world recognizes hate speech for what it is, AND the harm it causes. From propagating flat out lies, to inciting hatred (which in turn incites violence), to segregating one part of a populace for something that makes it different (and CERTAINLY of no harm in and of itself; despite those that would preach this sickening nonsense would have everyone think), These are very solid reasons indeed why most of the free, advanced world makes hate speech a crime. One could even draw a solid link from 'the right of free speech' to the extreme resistance to the true rights for ALL individuals; to not be assaulted, hated, and otherwise attacked by small minded bigots.

Glad to see that the London mayor has the stones to stand up against such nonsense, however.
