    Of course he didn't. He lose most of his supporters if he came out in support and he'd look like a fool if he came out against it.

    That doesn't make any sense. Does that mean two gays married are okay? Because I doubt that's what he means, but that's how it reads.

    It's not really a stance on gay marriage at all, just civil unions. He doesn't want two identical institutions of union recognised by government, which makes sense; if there are going to be two they should have some sort of distinction and purpose.

    No, that's not at all what he's saying. It's a whole hell of a lot more cruel and hurtful than that. He's saying that he's against civil unions if they provide the same benefits that marriage does to heterosexuals.

    Hence him being against civil unions if they are "identify marriage other than by name."
