    This is simply amazing.

Exodus has been the largest group of asshats in the US, who have claimed for 20 years or more that they could "cure" gay people through their bullshit "reparative therapy." This could consist of a combination of anything from prayer to aversion therapy (watching gay porn while being injected with drugs to make one nauseous), damaging psychotherapy/brainwashing, and other unvalidated, non-working, and in some cases, extremely psychologically damaging "treatments" to cure homosexuality.

The overwhelming majority of people treated through Exodus' programs went back to being gay soon after. Nearly all of the remaining minority admit they are still attracted to people of the same sex, but "with help from God" they "keep it under control." And a tiny, tiny handful (maybe a couple percent) claim to have been converted... but closer research indicates that these may have been people who were never gay at all.

Nice to see that the founder of the organization has finally owned up to his own denial

no, no, it's still an illness... just an incurable one...

ok, so if I squint, this looks like a slight shuffle towards a step in the right direction on Alan Chambers part. he's still saying it's a sin to act on our feelings, though... which might really an attempt to hook us in and trick us into thinking that they don't still want to "cure" us...

I mean, think about it - if God calls all gay people to forever be celibate or become straight, and you join an organization that teaches that but only offers - not pushes, mind, just offers - "reparitive therapies" - who is going to seriously join, but not go into the therapies?

maybe he's speaking in good faith, but I would be extremely careful with the whole "it's a sin but not something we think everyone can be cured of" line of reasoning... that's how Courage draws people in, and then refers them to NARTH, Exodus, Living Hope, and other crazies... so I would be wary of this reasoning, tbh...

Good point... although the battle is slowly being won by attrition if nothing else. Here we have the poster child for Exodus basically admitting he's still a poof, still has feelings for men, but "loves his wife" and isn't acting on his Godless feelings.

And in 2010, George Rekers, one of the mainstay researchers for NARTH and Focus on the Family, was found to be traveling all over Europe with a Rentboy, whom he supposedly hired to "carry his bags" because he had a "bad back", but who also apparently provided certain massage services. His career took a huge dump after that revelation.

So I think we're making incremental progress, though I agree that these people are ignorant, shady, and, of course, they think they have God on their side.
