BBC News - Archbishop Philip Tartaglia's gay MP remark 'adds to family's grief'

I didn't see this posted anywhere so I thought I'd start a thread for it. A little background - David Cairns was a Labour MP and former government minister, who was gay and also used to be a Catholic priest. He died in 2011 after suffering from pancreatitis.

Bishop Tartaglia has just been appointed Glasgow's new archbishop and shortly after this was announced, a video surfaced whereby he made remarks suggesting the 44 year old politician's death was somehow linked to his sexuality, and tried to imply that gay men die a lot younger because they're gay.



I don't know whether I'm more annoyed at the homophobia or the complete ignorance. It baffles me why anyone still shows any respect to these people, when they talk such utter nonsense. Looks like the Church has replaced one buffoon with another...

I agree with you - they don't respect me so I take no notice of them.

I believe they have every right to their own opinion, to speak "ex cathedra" on the matter viz-à-viz to his followers, but I think his words should be reserved for his church and not spoken out to the general public.

The church has no role to play in civil society.

Respect is given where respect is shown. If they want everyone to listen, they should listen to everyone- with an open mind.
