So, excuse my stupidity, but can someone explain to me what this means?
I understand the Democratic Party is supporting the LGBT community, but it sounds far bigger than that.

It pretty much, and Americans correct me if I'm wrong, that one of the platform points for the Democratic Party this upcoming year will be to establish same-sex marriage across the nation. So now it won't just be a case of hmmm should we maybe put forward a bill for same-sex marriage in Texas, etc? Now I THINK (again could be way off) it means "we're pushing for bills in all states that don't have same-sex marriage yet."

Revan more-or-less has the right of it. The Party Platform can be thought of as a political manifesto, which outlines the positions the party as a whole supports, along with the parties basic values.

In this case, it appears as if the platform is going to support fighting for gay marriage, repeal of DOMA, and support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

Before Obama came out in support of gay marriage, most Democrats were wishy-washy on the issue. None wanted to really step out on a limb and make waves. Now that Obama has taken the plunge the rest of the party is following suit.
