Bret Easten says: "Matt Bomer is too gay for 'Fifty Shades of Gray' " Matt Bomer Is Too Gay For 'Fifty Shades Of Grey,' Says Bret Easton Ellis
^ this. Though I find this funny, because I'm supposed to message back a friend who was going on about how he thinks he should still be somewhat closeted since his big dream is to make it to acting in Hollywood... I was drafting a reply and thought that was silly. Guess I was wrong.
I don't really see this as a big deal. It's 50 Shades of Grey, women will be packing the theater to see it, and casting someone who's gay in the pivotal role can seriously cut some realism for a lot of the viewers and prevent people from seeing the movie. I've never read the book so I don't know the story really other than a really basic plot outline, but if they want to draw women to the theater, then yeah, it'd be best to cast a straight actor.
Matt Bomer didnt sink Magic Mike when it came out in the theatre. I didn't go see it myself, but I dont remeber hearing his character was gay or anything. The issue I take with the idea that women will care if the actor is gay or straight is that FSoG is nothing more than torture porn. even its fans call is 'mommy porn'. It is a story about a shallow, clumsy skank who signs a contract to be the sex slave of a emotionally and mentally disturbed rich guy, who she believes she can cure him of his Post Truamatic Stress Disorder that is at the root of his severe psychosis by allowing him to be sexually violent towards her. To say that the kinds of women who are eating up these books would be discerning enough to give a crap about the real-life sexuality of an actor is silly; they wont care as long as the person playing Grey is extremely hawt. If they had discerning taste, they would never be reading FSoG. It is horrendously written just on the standards of even the most basic concepts of writing, not to mention that the story is incredibly silly, and at times downright gross. the book upholds two sad realities: smut sells, and there is a sucker born every minute.
He didn't play a major character. And, let's be honest, he was hired because he's hot and has a nice body. Not because he's a great actor or anything (he is, but still). And while someone might "take issue" with it, that's the world we live in. Obviously they want the film to make the biggest profit possible, and hiring an openly gay actor into a role that women fantasize about does seem kill the effect for them. I mean, like it or not, people are reading it. And it's still selling incredibly well.
While I think for an author who consistently pushes aside admitting his own sexuality it's extremely ridiculous, I don't want him to be in 50 Shades...
Didn't it ssay something bout bisexual at the bottom? So he is , in a way, failry straight and gay XP
Amber Heard didn't seem to have any problem when she was cast in The Rum Diary and Neil Patrick Harris doesn't have a problem playing Barney, so I don't see why it would be an issue now. Any time I see Bomer's picture anywhere women are always fawning over him. I've never heard of this Bret Easten, and a Wiki search says he's penned one psychological thriller that was a big hit over a dozen years ago--so why should anyone care an iota about what this washed-up hack says about anything?
Meh - there's a reason movies use actors for acting, it's because they're there to act. ---------- Post added 8th Aug 2012 at 10:58 AM ---------- American Psycho is amazing. I don't care about his opinion here, but you should definitely read that...or at the very least, watch the movie.
Seriously. Not to mention the many, many straight actors that have been in gay themed movies. People are ridiculous xD But whatever. They are allowed to hire what they think works. I still don't get why people are going nuts over this book though xD
That's so stupid. He's a professional actor. He plays roles that are not himself. Straight actors play gay roles, why not vice versa? And going further than that, is Johnny Depp really a pirate? Is Al Pacino actually a vicious gangster? Is Jack Nicholson actually a psychopathic madman? Wait, forget that last one But yeah, he's an actor. His sexual orientation shouldn't make any difference. All that matters is if he's a good actor or not.
