Straight people contribute to HIV too, so why should we support their activities?

This pathologization of queerness has been in the works for a long time, and it is not just in Malaysia, but here at home as well (of course, the major medical professional organizations don't push this view, and some have called it unethical like they should). It goes to show how powerful medical language can be to reinforce oppression.

Malaysia is a third world authoritarian state. Things like freedom of religion have no meaning there, they force their archaic views upon all of their society.

How is freedom of religion relevant? Perfect freedom of religion would not alleviate this problem of official homophobia.

Thank God! It seems I'm in the clear. I won't lie, for a time I was afraid I was a raging homo, you know - with the desire to have hot man-on-man sex and stuff. However, I'm proud to report that I'm still symptom free, though sadly, it has crossed my mind a time or two to buy a V-Neck, and I've often believed that having a man purse would be handy. Pray for me, to give me strength to resist the murse and V-Neck temptations.

Their official policy is based on Islamic sharia law.

I get that the definition of sharia law is the rejection of religious freedom, but I still don't see how freedom of religion would help the culture of heterosexism.

    Sharia law outlaws non-sharia practice.
    Sharia law outlaws non-heterosexuality.

As long as the country is under sharia law, no progress can be made. If there was freedom of religion, then influence could come from non-sharia sources, which is the only way the homosexuality is going to see any progress.

I can easily imagine a country where the citizens enjoy freedom of religion and yet the culture of heterosexism is strongly entrenched.

Reading that gave me a headache....like I don't think I've read anything so incredibly stupid...except maybe Rick Santorum's last speech.

Yes. And a theocracy of a religion that was accepting of gays would not necessarily be homophobic at at all.

Still oppressive, but not necessarily homophobic.

Women who spend time with and eat with other women... I believe that every girl in my school is a lesbian, if the article is to be believed. The ideas some people get are just ridiculous!!

Unfortunately, Malaysia is approximately only fifty years behind the USA. Let's not forget, the United States is rooted in Christianity and, it once considered sodomy as a felonious crime. A crime punishable by a lengthy prison term in practically every single state.

sodomy was only de-criminalised in 2003 and within the US military, it is still prosecutable.
