So far, I've seen a lot of people say things that hint that Mormonism is extremely anti-gay. I've seen two people so far say the Mormon Church is "our biggest threat" and stuff like that. But why? I was raised Catholic and the religion I grew up in opposes homosexuality. In fact a lot of Christian denominations oppose homosexuality. So why is Mormonism given so much attention? I'm not Mormon by the way, just wondering? :confused2:
I read somewhere that (some) Mormons are nearly as bad as the Westboro Baptist Church. I don't have proof of this, and I'm not entirely sure that it's true. Just throwing it out there. (And of course, this doesn't apply to everybody who is Mormon.) I do know quite a few Mormon people, and I'm friends with some of them. The family I know are very anti-gay. I've heard them say things like: "Being gay is wrong and disgusting. It's a disease." "I saw two LESBIANS at the mall. Can you believe it? So gross..." "What? He's gay?! No, he's too young to make a decision like that." Not quite as bad as Westboro, thankfully. But I'm not sure exactly why they get so much attention.
The Mormon Church funnels a huge amount of money into political campaigns against gay rights. Comparing them to WBC doesn't really make sense, though. WBC is politically powerless and seen as a pariah by everyone, where the Mormon Church has quite a bit of political clout. In terms of beliefs wrt homosexuality, WBC believes that God chose to make people gay so that he could damn them, where the Mormons don't believe that hardly anyone gets damned, although they do believe that homosexual desires are not a choice.
You're right, doesn't make much sense. Can't for the life of me remember where I read it. But I think they were referring to the level of hate directed towards LGBT people.
Yeah, Westboro Baptist Church is way worse. Ohhh...okay. True. So God's hates them and is mad at them, though God's reason that their gay? Those people make no sense. They believe that everyone struggles with different sins, because Satan gets at everyone differently. Maybe you're born with a propensity to have anger issues, or be a compulsive gambler, or drink too much, or look at porn, or whatever, and some people's "thing" is homosexuality. However, they do not believe homosexuality is legitimate-- they believe that some people "struggle with homosexual feelings" (just like some people struggle with excessive anger, compulsions toward gambling, etc.) and like any of these other sins, the thoughts can be overcome so you don't act on them.
The Mormon church indirectly funded Prop 8 that banned gay marriage in California. Although other churches I believe did also donate to the cause, at the same time the Mormon church has been shown to be one of the biggest donators to the cause.
The Mormons, as an institution, are evil toward gay people. In addition to (illegally) providing a very large portion of the funding for Prop 8 as well as Maine's Prop 1, they are also the single largest stumbling block to the Boy Scouts eliminating their bigotry toward acceptance of LGBT people into Scouting, as the Mormon Church is one of the, if not *the* largest funder of the Scouts, and they've threatened to pull all of their funding if the Scouts accept LGBT youth. That said, my experience with individual Mormons is that they tend to be the nicest, kindest, most thoughtful people you'll ever run into, and the church has a long reputation for being very supportive and helpful to its members in bad times. They just have some incredibly backward and bigoted views.
