This has been in the works for a long time, but I'm really happy to see that Gov. Brown signed the legislation. It's a landmark bill that will make it illegal for anyone to practice so-called "conversion", "ex-gay", or "reparative therapy" on any teen:

This will save much pain and prevent many suicides.

Anyone else scared by that fact that it was in the first place, and is still in many other states, legal?

it's legal in EVERY other state. California is a trendsetter here. In most, parents can force children into inpatient treatment programs that border on barbaric. CPS in most states is reluctant to intervene even when they find out, because it's on the border between religious freedom and health of the child.

So hopefully this is the beginning of the end of this sort of BS.

affects any other countries that might follow suit with such a law. ex gay "therapies" exist in a lot of countries, sadly.

This is wonderful news, and I believe it will be critical for the mental health of queer teens, not only in California but also around the country to know that there's at least one state in the country that recognizes it as a totally unscientific, harmful and dehumanizing approach to minority sexualities and gender identities. This is the lighting of a torch of reason.

So happy to hear. I'm sure a lot of people will be spared of emotional trauma and I hope many lives are saved.

I hope every state will adopt this eventually. It will take forever for many conservative states, but California has set the ball rolling

I'm so glad, and I'm glad for my hopelessly closeted cousin in the north of the state, who won't have to worry about this very real possibility for him (his parents are SCARY). A big step forward, now it just needs to spread.
