That's what I thought.. I thought that it was kinda odd. I see where they are coming from, but this is a state of Ohio problem and not a construction worker problem. I also feel that it compromised their safety.

"People working" might have too many letters to fit. Maybe they could do an orange "careful" sign. Bottom line is, they made these signs long before these concerns were raised. So let's continue to use them until they fall apart. At which point they can be replaced by something neutral. But if we got 'em, we're gonna use 'em.

I feel like at a certain point, activists need to pick their battles. Yes the signs assume that men do construction work and women don't. That's not good. On the other hand, spending more money to replace those perfectly functional signs is not a reasonable endeavor.

In most languages the male plural is used for mixed groups. Yes it is sexist, but grammatically it actually does includes women.

I hope they never read The Lord of the Rings.

We just have "Works ahead", so we are already grammatically prepared for our robot overlords.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say that I think this is a good thing. Obviously the workers didn't have the intention of being sexist, but I don't think changing their sign to be more politically correct is a bad thing.
