    An acceptable defense would have been that he misspoke, and that he meant to say that having gay children is not something parents expect or can anticipate. Instead, he went the "I'm not X, some of my best friends are [insert victims of X]" route, which just makes him seem like even more of a dope. Which is a shame, because he does seem generally supportive of gay rights.
