Sometimes they say "Couples only", sometimes they say "Mixed groups only" and sometimes they'll simply say that the're no letting in any more men. Maybe they think that if there are three men for every one woman, we'll start howling and glassing each other over them. Or that women simply pacify rowdy, drunken men and who are they to judge which men are going to be trouble? Although one of people who commented said as much from personal experience.
