Transgender Military Veterans

This is a copy and paste of answers for a question I asked on a different site. It could be worth mentioning on here, hopefully.

What happens to Transgendered and Transsexual military veterans? Do they get treated the same as other veterans despite their changes? Do they get kicked out of the military?

- yes you get kicked out for HRT, gender reassignment surgery or any other medical procedure that alters your biological factory settings.

what VA benefits they retain after service will depend on their discharge code and characterization. there is no one size fits all answer.

- Like the other guy said, Transexuals nor Transgenders are permitted to join the Military, although your sexual orientation does not matter anymore.

- It is not as uncommon as we might think.

There are some legal bumps in the road but otherwise, they go through the same stuff that non-military goes through, with regard to this procedure and lifestyle change.

- Let's be serious, first; we are speaking about those persons who transition from one gender to another. We are speaking about transsexuals specifically. In today's medical world of VA clinic and hospitals it can be different as to what kind of services and attitudes towards us we receive from staff members. Overall, you get good help and no disrespect and you get staff who resist your presence.

For me, I used Humana Military Health Care to get all my hormones, and when I developed breast cancer they paid for my mastectomy surgery, health care and products, my breast reconstruction and implants, they also paid for my gonadal surgery because I had developed breast cancer.

For those who are active service, the military seem to be less likely to press for immediate discharge but give them medical help and patience.

- The VA has gotten a lot better on how they treat trans veterans, but there's a long way to go. Trans people should be able to serve openly in the military, and there's plenty of proof that being trans doesn't interfere with one's ability to perform their military duties. Trans veterans should be able to go a veteran's event with pride that they served without the fear of being shunned by their fellow vets or being called a disgrace to their country by homophobic and transphobic individuals.

- Good news! The VA adopted new rules for treating transgender veterans last year.

They now provide counseling and hormone replacement therapy for transsexual people. However, they do not cover any surgery.

And other than that they are now treated with the same respect as other veterans.
