Tennessee 'Don't Say Gay' bill now requires teachers to inform parents if their child is gay I think the link name speaks for itself. Thoughts?
I was going to post this too this afternoon, but decided against it. I would like to say I don't if this was ever really voted on before. I know the bill has been introduced I believe 3 times now, but what I will tell you this... The Senate only has 7 Democrats and has 26 Republicans. Republicans gained +6 seats in that chamber. In the House 27 Democrats and 71 Republicans. Republicans gained 7 seats in that chamber. You might think Im crazy, but I believe this can pass.
I believe it was voted on before, and it failed to pass? But I'm not 100% on that. And I don't think you're crazy. I've lived in Tennessee all my life, I know first-hand how bigoted most of my state's politicians are / can be.
What?! I visit Tennessee every few months and absolutely love it there. They best not pass this bill, that's just stupid. Bless the gay students in those schools...
I fucking hate people. ---------- Post added 30th Jan 2013 at 07:30 PM ---------- Let's all just move to another planet.
The bill wasn't voted on before, it wasn't put up for a vote. But I don't think there's much doubt it could pass the Republican-dominated Tennessee Senate and House. One very real reminder of the disastrous consequences for LGBTQ people when Republicans are in power. Any queer person who votes Republican really needs to step back and look at their consequences of allowing that party into power.
That's awful! Sometimes it's easiest for kids to talk with the school counselor when faced with these problems and don't want their parents to know yet. I hope this doesn't pass. It probably won't, but it's still appalling that this was brought forth at all.
That's the Senate. It was never voted on in the House, which is why the bill died. 'Don't Say Gay Bill' To Die With Adjournment of 107th | Humphrey on the Hill | knoxnews.com
I thought we were supposed to be moving forward. And a counselor is NOT allowed to tell a parent anything said unless the person is a danger to themself or someone else so I don't even see how they can get away with something like this. This is a law promoting discrimination. I don't see a bill going around for teachers having to tell straight students parents that they're children are straight or engaging in sexual activity. This is just showing kids that there isn't a safe place for them to be themselves and that's sad because school is supposed to be that place.
Im still confident this can pass the Senate again and that it will come up in the House. Do I want that to happen... No
Oh my god that's messed up. I'm really dreading the possibility of a much higher LGBT suicide rate because of this.
