Indiana School Community Calls For Gay-Free Prom As Media Sugarcoats Homophobia

    Oh come on....

If half the people that read this send a brief but succinct email to the administration at Sullivan High School, it would send a resounding message to that community that says WE DO NOT ACCEPT YOUR IGNORANCE.

You beat me to the punch, I just posted the same thread. How is this lady a teacher? I hope she was full of shit when she said gay kids have come to her for advice, who know's what kind of damage she could have caused them with her hate filled speech. It's a public school this needs to stop.

I disagree that it's ignorance we're facing here. It's hatred. Why is it that we have such difficulty attributing malice to people when it's so clear? To say that people are ignorant is to say that, were they appraised of the facts, they would like us. The reality is that no amount of evidence could get them to like us. We need to understand they are evil and move on.

I really hate when they say being gay is a choice, I can't understand how they can be so overwhelmingly bold saying such words from a perspective of pure ignorance.

I hate how people like this act as if they're the victim and that there're making some kind of brave stand by spewing hate at children. They want to say I don't have a purpose in life go ahead I'm mature and comfortable in my sexuality, I can deal with their hatred but when they do this to children it leads to disaster. I don't care how uncomfortable homosexuality makes them feel, they're not going to kill themselves because some gay kids go to their prom but some gay kid may just do that because of the disgusting hate that these monsters are spreading. It makes me so sad and angry.

I don't think the concepts of hate and ignorance are mutually exclusive. I think one leads to the other, and in no particular order. Hate in many cases leads to ignorance. Ignorance in many cases leads to hate. I completely agree in that there is a large degree of hatred in such statements and I believe it exists because of a lack of understanding. And their hate is exercised by their complete unwillingness to understand. Not all of these people are stupid people. You've had classes with them, you've worked with them, you come in contact with them all the time. These people are not incapable of good decision-making or problem solving. They willfully maintain complete ignorance of what homosexuality is, a combination of ignorance and hate.

OMG how can people be so ignorant and stupid! Prom is about going to have fun and creating memories with the person you want to g with! whether it's someone from the same sex or opposite. They need to stop doing this thing a big deal and just let the students be.

I'm from Indiana. Not surprised here.

Prom should be a time for fun. It's totally an unsung rule here - you really don't go to prom as a gay couple. It just doesn't happen that often. Hopefully, that will change. Ironically, things like this change that.

But this? This is hatred and bigotry. It's pathetic. How can these people be teachers? All they teach is hate and bigotry.

"We're victims of others wanting equal rights so we're going to discriminate against them!"

Please...I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

Is it a public high school?

Then they have no right to discriminate. Case closed.

If LGBT people aren't allowed there, they don't get disco balls.

Sexual Orientation isn't protected under law in most states.

However, as a public school, getting money from the federal government has different sets of rules that they may have violated with this. It gets iffy.
