It's a stupid people problem, not a gun problem. That being said, this is a horrible crime and I wish that New York still had the death penalty so that people like this gunman could get their just desserts.
I don't mean to distract from the tragedy, and this is a horrible tragedy, but this occurred in New York. New York has some of the toughest gun laws in the nation, perhaps only second to California and Massachusetts.

Actually we do have the death penalty but only a judge can give someone the death penalty but that's against the constitution. So we have it but we don't have any way to use it. They could just replace judge with jury in the law and boom we have a WORKING death penalty but the officials don't want to change it because they don't want to look like they are for or against it -_-. It's amazing the things you learn when your best friend is a criminal justice major lol.
