In February, the Same Sex marriage bill passed its second and most crucial reading by the House of Commons (the lower house, equivalent to the House of Representatives) without too many hiccoughs and with a large majority. It's only for England and Wales - Scotland and Northern Ireland's governments take marriage into their own hands.

Anyway, it's back on its third and final reading with some amendments, extending civil partnerships (which have existed since 2005 for gay couples only) to straight couples. This is obviously something that most people in favour of, the only problem is that it was proposed by those who voted against the original bill in the first place. Why do they want this? It would delay gay marriage being implemented for many years, for reasons I don't quite understand.

So although equalising civil partnerships may seem progressive, and it is, the reasons for doing so seem simply to delay the Same Sex marriage bill being implemented rather than out of genuine concerns for equality. As it's slowly become clear that there's an ulterior motive, Labour (the centre-leaning rather than right-leaning party, and the opposition) have stopped supporting the plans and it seems the amendment won't pass, meaning that gay marriage will hopefully still happen quite soon. We'll find out tomorrow, anyway.

I see some of the Homophobic Members of the Conservative Party & Grass Root Members are trying to sabotage the Bill :eusa_naug

It has passed, majority of 205! Even my MP was there, unlike at Second Reading and gave a short 'intervention' to say even our area there's a majority for this bill. Awesome.

Now, the House of Lords. Possibly problematic.
