I'm pretty sure patients won't care if they get gay blood or not. We all bleed red. This policy needs to be updated.

Good news. Hopefully the FDA will follow suit, and hopefully there won't be a ridiculous deferral period.

Good. People who donate blood should do it responsibly, regardless of sexuality, and donors should be trusted to do so. (Obviously testing is necessary, but the idea of prohibiting donation based on sexuality when the donor could be a gay man who's been in a monogamous relationship with a partner he trusts is ridiculous).

I remember when I gave blood about a year ago, I was interviewed (as everyone is). The question I was asked was "Have you ever had sexual contact with another male?", but for females, the question is: "Have you ever had sexual contact with a male who has had sexual contact with another male?"

...because that's totally realistic question that I'm sure every female knows lol

    About. Damn. Time.

I'll never forget the first (and only) time I tried to donate blood. The phlebotomist asked me asked me "have you ever had sex with a man who's had sex with another man?" I started laughing and asked her why. She explained, and I got up and walked out.

This was back in the 90s I hear they've relaxed and only ask about 5 years back now, but frankly? Fuck that. When they STOP being homophobic, then this homo will start donating blood. Till then they can get blood by biting my queer ass.

It's about time. The Red Cross and several other orginisations have been advocating this for several years already.
Hopefully other countries will take this under consideration as well.

I bleed the same blood as straight people. This is utterly ludicrous.

I guess I'm happy, the AMA saying this is rather huge. I mean they do have a LOT of pull I think. Or do they? :S

It's so ridiculous that gays can't donate blood. Unbelievable. They test it anyway! Straight people get STDs too! I hate that this law insinuates that gay blood is toxic. Not fair at all. I can't wait for this to be changed so every healthy person can donate regardless of sexual orientation.
