LGBT News House Conservatives Push for Marriage Amendment After Supreme Court Ruling

Nope, this isn't going anywhere. Especially as a constitutional amendment.

For that to happen, it would have to clear the house, the senate (both by a 2/3 majority), and be ratified by 2/3s of the states. (38 of them)

I think they're a bit late, here.

Sour grapes, is what it is, and I say let them gag on them!

No, because it would require a 2/3rd majority in the House and Senate to pass. (Then it has to go to the states to be ratified.) The Democrats will never vote to support a Constitutional Amendment banning gay marriage, because the majority of them are already on record now supporting gay marriage. There are even Republicans who won't support a Constitutional Amendment.

This is actually good news for us because it's going to force Republicans to actually start getting on the record again post the DOMA ruling on gay marriage. Hopefully there will be enough pressure to encourage some pro-marriage Republicans to step forward.

 

They're trying to legislate the Bible, which is unconstitutional by the First Amendment.

I'd be completely shocked if it got passed.

Ha I saw video on Rachel Maddow last night of that dumbass making that comment. Half-way through his statement about "a mommy and a daddy" his voice was drowned out by loud cheers of the crowd as gay couples emerged victorious from the courthouse. It was a perfect little display of how out-of-touch and stuck in the past Republicans are. Clueless and oblivious buffoons.

 

I knew this was coming. Like, are we surprised? The sad part is....I think it could totally get far. We've ticked off mad conservatives who love guns...like they are afraid to speak their beliefs? It's been a good day for us, but we need to get our ponchos on because their shit is hitting the fan.

 

It's unbelievable the way people are convinced about us, without any doubt in their mind... That's really all I need or want to say about it.

Ah yes, the "small government" party hard at work once again. You'd think the Republicans would favor something like gay marriage based on their platform of small government, lower taxes, business growth. But no.

 

Uh, this amendment isn't going anywhere. The Republicans couldn't get it passed in the darkest days of the 90s or the Bush years, when marriage equality seemed like a pipe dream, and Republicans were able to exploit homophobia as a wedge issue to get votes. No way they could get it done now that opposing equality is clearly a losing issue.

 

Nothing to see here. Just the Republicans pissing in the wind.

I agree with cBuilding. This amendment would be unconstitutional in and of itself. It would undermine our freedom as Americans. That alone would shoot it down.

 

I agree with him regarding the fact that marriage equality does redefine marriage. But it's doing so to not trump DOMA's definition. Rather, the definition is being expanded so that all families are viewed equal under the eyes of the government.

And so this is my response to this uncultured representative:

 

I didn't say it would be passed. I said that I feel it could go far - could is not will.

I'm just saying - we can't underestimate people!

 

It's probably time that the Conservatives and Republicans rename themselves to something more fitting.

The left has the "Progressives", so the right must have the "Regressives".

Eh, just a complete waste of time.

This is merely an attempt for some members of the house to get some extra credibility from voters in super red districts, and to prevent a primary challenge.

Nothing's going to get passed - like everything else.

 

Pretty sure since the Senate is made up by more Democrats over Republicans, even if the House somehow passes it, the Senate would stop it.
