    This is good news!

It looks like cases related to DOMA being struck down are starting to roll in.

I grew up in Michigan, but sady, it has some of the most repressive anti-gay laws...I really hope this changes, as both my partner and our families both live there, and someday, we'd like to move back to our homestate...and still be able to be married.

Not to mention, I miss all the lakes, the fresh air, and nature.

The next few years will mostly be about red states getting steamrolled by the very same constitution they so love to wave around.

Michigan has been reliably blue in presidential and US senate elections, but on the state level, things have been ugly. I really hope they can get the current governor out of office; he's the worst thing since Engler.

I might come out if, in a few years, red states become blue.

I'm such a pussy to come out so late

Oh, those states won't be turning blue anytime soon, they just won't be able to discriminate against gays so easily. No way will legalizing same-sex marriage will turn red states into blue states :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

You should come out nonetheless when you feel comfortable with other people knowing. Don't wait for the impossible :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

It is nice to see! I grew up outside of Traverse City, and I really miss it up there. When I was younger, I couldn't wait to get away, and take off for the big city...now that I have a partner, I'd love to move back, though it's hard to find work there.

Well, here's to hoping for marriage equality in Michigan, and in every state. This 'married in one state, but leave it and you're not married anymore' business is stupid and unfair.

This is good. Be interesting to see how the state tries to argue this...

Finally, a step forward! For often going blue, Michigan sure likes to retain some antiquated ideas.

They have quite a case too, considering SCOTUS ruled that labeling marriage as between a man and a woman is discriminatory against same-sex couples.

It can go either way still, but there's now legal evidence from the highest court in the US to combat the anti-same-sex marriage laws.

I really hope it's not like the Reconstruction Period. They made good progress on African American rights, but there was a backlash that lasted nearly 100 years. Just sayin'.

Soon most states will have Gay marriage. 1/3 of the nation already has it. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:ride:

It's interesting that a state I consider to be liberal, and more open could have laws like this. Traditionally I think of gay rights problems being centred in the South, and had no idea Michigan was like that. It is beside my Province, Ontario, which is extremely liberal, and I can't imagine that not too far away there are problems like that.

The South is definitely the worst region in the U.S. for gay rights, but Midwestern states like Michigan can also be conservative. The most liberal region in the U.S. is the Northeast (home to 9 out of 12 marriage equality states), followed by the West Coast.

Michigan voted to ban same-sex marriage in 2004 with 58.62% of the vote. (That same year Mississippi voted to ban marriage with a whopping 86.01% of the vote, so clearly it's a big difference of a degree compared to the South) That same election Michigan voted Democratic with 51.23% of the vote, and I think the discrepancy can be largely be explained by the fact that black voters, of which Michigan has a large population, were mostly opposed to marriage equality at that point, even though they were strongly Democratic.

Obviously there has been a lot of progress on this issue and massive changes in public opinion since 2004, so we would probably win in Michigan today, though still not in Mississippi.

YESSSS!!!!!!!! Born and bred Michigander. Can't wait to leave, but I'll still vote for equality when it comes up for a vote in 2016. Hopefully it will be gone then.

That's great! Too bad it's still a very boring state, I'm moving away from here as soon as I can.

but only on the 2nd ammendment. they loathe and shit all over the rest of them. the one they hate the most is the 1st ammendment, and techncially, they want to rewrite the second ammendment, since it mandates the goverment regulates guns.
