When I try to send a private message, the system won't allow it, saying that I am "not permitted". Sometimes I might want to help someone out who is going through a tough time, and PM's are good way to do that. Why am I blocked from sending PMs? Is it just me, or does this happen to others, too?

    It's cause you're a Regualr Member.
You only can send PM when being a Full Member.

Ah...I suspected this, but thought that maybe there was just a glitch in my case. Ok, thanks for letting me know. Just one more question...why is this rule in place?

This rule is in place because we want to keep EC a safe space. The sad reality is that this is the internet, and there are creepers everywhere. So, we have to have a process to be able to spot those that are here to cause problems. If they had access to the PM system, they could cause all sorts of damage.

Yes, I can see your point... I kind of had a suspicion that maybe it was in case christian or other religious nutjobs might join up, then start to pm folks to try to 'save' them lol...but you are right, there are LOTS of undesireable types that we would not want here. I can see why a strict trial period is warranted.

In addition to this, both ends of the message needs to be Full Members. Regular Members (IIRC) can only send PMs to Staff members.
